Optimize your website for Google

Optimize your website for Google

Optimizing your website for Google is something everyone should do. Here are some tips on how to make your site more visible on Google.

Let’s start with the boring stuff: there’s no quick fix to appearing organically on Google. It’s systematic work over time that helps you get better search results and rank higher. Google’s basic attitude is to reward the sites that are good and create value for those searching for a specific search string.

The funny thing is, even if you’re small, you can actually get good results on Google – if you do the right work and optimize your site for Google.

Optimizing your website for Google – SEO

The process of getting on Google is called search engine optimization and is usually abbreviated to SEO (Search Engine Optimazation). SEO is a big part of a digital strategy. It’s complex work and those who do it – SEO experts – are in demand. As a digital marketing consultant, this is something I can help you with – making the right decisions about SEO.

Google’s algorithm is secret but, in simple terms, it can be divided into three different parts: technology, links and content.

SEO – technology

Technology is linked to how the site is coded and how good the server the site is on is. Basically, technology is about how fast the page loads and how mobile-friendly it is. The faster it charges the better.

Coding is a specialist skill that should be left to the specialists. The benefits are that you get a site that is optimally built from a technical perspective. The downside, of course, is that it costs money to build a site from scratch.

The alternative is to invest in a theme. If you build your site in wordpress, there are thousands and thousands of themes to choose from. You can get a great looking theme for a few hundred dollars. Most of the themes you pay for are technically sound. It’s okay, but not perfect. If you’re going after a highly competitive keyword, all else being equal, this can be the difference between ranking high and not.

If the business potential of ranking high is great, it is worth investing in the technology to get a fast site.

SEO – links from others to your site

Google’s algorithm for exactly how it ranks is a well-kept secret. Moreover, it changes in small nuances several hundred times a year. What is known, however, is that links from other sites – so-called backlinks – are extremely important for the ranking of your site. Links from others build the credibility of your site.

It is of course difficult to get others to link to your site. This is a decision the other site owner owns. In theory, there is really only one way to get others to link to your site: creating good and unique content that they think is so good that they want to link to it.

SEO – producing the right content

Creating content on your own site is a process that you own. The more good content you create, the ‘heavier’ your site becomes on the internet. The more good content you create, the more likely it is that others will link to your site.

In the process of creating your own content, it is also important to publish the content in the right way. Here are seven things to consider when producing and publishing your own content.. (This is quite important to understand. I have written another article solely on SEO. You can read it here).

“There are still some simple things you can do to make Google find you better”.

Optimize your website for Google – you can do it yourself:

1. What are the most important keywords for you to be found on?

It is not possible for Google to find you for all the keywords you want. You need to decide which keywords you want to target in the long term and create content around this. (Read more about it here) .

2nd title

Page title or  Meta Title is very important for getting better search results. It should be identical to the page’s permalink and what is visible in the browser. It is the address of this particular page (in this case: https://www.mattiasbrannholm.com/optimera-hemsidan-for-google/). This is the most important ranking factor of all to optimize your website for Google.

(This is why this site ranks higher when you search for “Mattias Brännholm” than hitta.se even though hitta.se is an infinitely heavier site than mine).

3. description

The description of the page, known as meta description explains to Google’s search spiders what the page is about. The text does not appear on the site itself. However, it is visible in Google’s search results (known as a snippet). Just as the text on the page should be unique, so should the page description. Yoast is a great tool here.

4. Headings and texts

The headings should also contain the search string you want to find. These should also be adapted for the search engines. The main heading, called H1, should contain the search string. The intermediate headings H2, H3, H4 should do the same. The higher the number, the lower the relevance of the title.

The text should also contain the search string. Preferably several times regularly in the text. If you want to optimize your website for Google, it is important that you do it right. (And that’s exactly what I did there: optimizing the website for Google is the search string for this post (and I naturally got it in there again…!).

However, it is important to remember: you are writing primarily for the human eye, not Google’s eyes. If your text is not appreciated by humans, Google will notice that the visitor leaves the page quickly and this has a negative impact on the ranking.

That said: dhis is what digital writers are so good at. To write a text that creates value for the person reading the text, while being optimized for the website so that Google appreciates it.

(I started writing for the local newspaper in my hometown when I was 15 years old and throughout my professional life I have been writing texts. I must admit that it has been difficult to adapt to the “template” that Google wants you to write. But once I adapted, it works smoothly).

5. images

Images are the hardest thing to get right.

You need to know the optimal format for your theme where the image will be published. You will process, crop and export the image in Photoshop or Lightroom (or similar). The image should preferably not be over 100k in size. You should export it and name it the search string you want to find. Once you have uploaded the image, fill in the description and especially the alt text.

It is the alt text that Google reads.

Almost everyone fails to do this.

I’ve done it too. In the last week I’ve been cropping, exporting and writing alt-texts to the point of vomiting. My goodness, I’m tired of it.

But boy, has it paid off!

If you search for my name on Google, 5 of the first 15 images are from my personal website. It was not active a month ago. (Of course, there’s no killer competition with pictures of me online. But I still rank ahead of LinkedIn).

6. Internal and external links

Links are also very important. That’s how Google’s search spider moves on. This is how you show Google that you are part of the giant ecosystem that is the internet.

Plus, it’s also how you build weight and explain to Google which search strings you think are important.

7. Download Yoast and install as a plugin

Yoast is probably the best plugin in the world (download it here).  when it comes to creating content on your site’s pages for Google to find. Once installed, it simply tells you whether you have done something right or wrong and how you can do it better. I use Yoast consistently when publishing content on the site.

Optimize your website for Google by publishing your content in the right way.
Optimize your website for Google by publishing your content in the right way. This is by far the easiest thing you can do to improve your ranking on Google. If you use the Yoast plugin and do the pulbicing correctly, you will get green dots to the right of the posts.

Do what you can to optimize your website

Finally, taking a holistic approach to your site’s search engine optimization is difficult. It takes some pretty advanced technical skills to do this successfully. But there are some things you can actually learn quickly. If you want better search results and to rank high on Google, you need to produce and publish content properly on a regular basis.

In fact, it is non-negotiable.

This page with this url was first published some years ago. Before I updated the site today, it ranked second for the keyword “Optimize website for Google” and appeared in the search results about 1700 times a month, with four clicks to the site. I have also updated the meta description (shown in the search results). It will be exciting to see if it now climbs a step…:-D
