SMX Fair on SEO in San Jose
The SMX fair is a fair that focuses on search engine marketing. This is what is known as SEO and SEM. It is held in San Jose, CA, at the end of January each year. It’s not one of the biggest fairs, but the organizer – Search Engine Land – is serious and capable.
I like going to trade fairs. You get to listen to a lot of really smart people in a short time. In addition, there is often the opportunity to ask questions and get quick and up-to-date answers from the best. The insights and energy when I go home from fairs are often quite extensive. In addition, I am gathering good knowledge and material for articles and posts.
Being in San Jose adds an extra dimension. On my way from the airport to the hotel, I passed by Facebook’s headquarters. Apple and Google are also nearby. The view from the hotel is the Adobe headquarters.

Digital marketing and communication is about creating good content in a digital context. I have 35 years of experience in content creation and think I have a pretty good handle on it. By also knowing, or at least understanding, digital and how good content should be packaged, I get a good overall knowledge of digital marketing and communication.
Digital includes such goodies as SEO, SEM, SMM, CRO, coding and programming, digital customer journeys, marketing automation and a few other odds and ends. I will never be an expert in any of it. I will never learn to code, for example, and my design eye is quite impaired. There will always be a lot of people who are much better than me at each part.
But by being here, I am significantly increasing my understanding of the digital world.
Creating a better understanding of digital
My ambition is to create a better understanding of the whole of the digital ecosystem than anyone else. In the day-to-day running of digital marketing, certainly 80% of the work is content creation. By also keeping an eye on digital, I create a helicopter perspective that is fundamental as a strategic consultant in digital marketing.
There are many managers today who know what tippy-top smells like and understand the importance of digital, but don’t know how to go about it. They are the ones I am addressing with my offer. To be a safe hand (having used tipp-ex) that can help them find a good way forward in the digital jungle.

That is why I am sitting here at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, CA, this morning. The news is screaming about the historic cold snap that is sweeping the US and will expose a quarter of a billion Americans to sub-zero temperatures (in Celsius). They talk about how it has never happened before.
I live across the street from the fair, wear only a sweater and don’t feel the cold. It’s California, after all…
